Most obviously missing from the ship are a number of grid-lines across the entire model. Given the XL-sized runabout is much larger original release, it’s pretty disappointing that additional detail was not added to this model, particularly given the premium price that the XL Starships line commands. But if you were hoping that the higher price point and additional scale would result in more detailing, I’m afraid you will be disappointed. This larger-scale model is more or less an identical upscale of the subscription-sized model released back in 2014, so if you’re just looking for a larger version of what might already be in your collection, you’re in luck. The cockpit, rear and bottom of the ship, sensor rollbar, and nacelles are all plastic, which makes the model’s weight feel light despite its chunkiness. Measuring approximately eight and a half inches in length, the XL-sized USS Orinoco is largely plastic, with the only metal component being a central component that includes the nacelle struts.
In addition to many appearances in Deep Space Nine, the runabout also appeared in an episode of The Next Generation (“Timeless”) and an episode of Voyager (“Non Sequitur”). The extra payload usually makes up for this more than enough.ĭue to people selling my models, this is the Boring Edition. While they are a little more maneuverable compared to a Danube while carying a single pod, this decreases dramatically when stacking pods. These pods can also be connected together planetside to form impromptu bases, or used to add extra firepower to the ship itself and thus creating a formidable weapons platform. The craft is, however, able to stack those pods on the bottom of one (up to three at a time), meaning they can carry considerable more payload than a Danube. Like the Danube the Mammoth features a modular design, although simplified to the point that only the back end can house modular pods no cockpit switching is available, more akin to the Earth pick-up trucks of old.
The extra firepower provided means that the Mammoth can stand her own in combat situations, even if traveling without pods. The extra space thus created compared to a Danube is used to house a set of micro torpedo launchers in the catamaran hull. The successor to the Danube Class, the Mammoth Class features a large payload possibility and an improved design, sporting a catamaran construction meant to protect the warpcore and a new Defiance line of warp nacelles with integrated deflectors.
